There are approximately 25 million smallholder farmers producing 80% of the world’s coffee; only about a dozen are Certified Biodynamic Coffee Farms! 

Biodynamic coffee farming is an approach to coffee cultivation that follows the principles of biodynamic agriculture. Biodynamic farming is a holistic and sustainable agricultural system that views the farm as a self-contained organism, aiming to create a balanced and harmonious relationship between the soil, plants, animals, and the surrounding environment. When applied to coffee farming, it involves applying these principles specifically to the cultivation of coffee plants.

  1. Organic Certification Biodynamic coffee farming begins with organic certification. The cultivation practices strictly adhere to organic farming methods, avoiding the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

  2. Biodiversity and Ecosystems Biodynamic coffee farming emphasizes the importance of biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. Farmers strive to create a diverse and balanced habitat by planting various shade trees, companion plants, and maintaining natural water sources. This approach encourages beneficial insects, birds, and wildlife, which help control pests and enhance the overall ecological health of the farm.

  3. Composting and Soil Health Biodynamic farmers focus on building and maintaining healthy soil. They utilize composting techniques, incorporating organic matter and farm waste into nutrient-rich compost to improve soil structure, fertility, and water retention. Biodynamic preparations, such as herbal and mineral-based compost additives, are also used to enhance soil vitality and microbial activity.

  4. Biodynamic Preparations Biodynamic coffee farming involves the use of specific preparations made from herbs, minerals, and animal substances. These preparations are fermented and applied to the soil, plants, or compost, following specific guidelines and timing. They are believed to stimulate soil health, plant growth, and overall farm vitality.

  5. Lunar and Astrological Calendar Biodynamic farming incorporates the lunar and astrological calendar for timing planting, cultivation, and harvesting activities. Certain phases of the moon are believed to have specific influences on plant growth and vitality. These calendar-based practices aim to align farming activities with natural rhythms and maximize plant potential.

  6. Farm as a Closed System Biodynamic coffee farming encourages the farm to be a self-sustaining system. Farmers aim to produce inputs on the farm, such as compost, fertilizers, and pest control solutions, reducing external dependencies. This closed-system approach contributes to long-term sustainability and reduces the farm's ecological footprint.
